Could Robots Assist With Elder Care?

robot elder careResearchers are creating robots that will be able assist with day to day tasks, potentially making independence more accessible for the senior population.

One example of this is the HOBBIT Mutual Care Robot; which is being designed by the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme to assist seniors in remaining independent and living at home.1

HOBBIT will be able to pick up items, bring items to the senior, detect emergency situations and then call the appropriate authorities.

HOBBIT will also be equipped with a variety of entertainment options that will help seniors stay connected with loved ones through social media applications such as Facebook, in addition to staying up to date on current events. HOBBIT will also have book and movie options that seniors can enjoy.

The goal of the HOBBIT is the mutual care concept where seniors and robots learn to care for each other. The researchers designing HOBBIT claim this concept is like the relationship between people and their pets, where people learn what words or phrases their pet understands. The purpose of this concept is to increase the general acceptance of in-home robots.

Robots may be the future of in-home care. Some are being designed to pair with wireless sensors worn by seniors to check their blood pressure, heart rate, temperature and more. Should any of their vital signs become unusual, emergency services or their doctor can be contacted immediately by the robot.

Future robots may warn the homeowner about smoke, carbon monoxide or other dangers in the house or remind them when it is time for them to take their medication or eat meals.2

At this point, robotic technology still has a ways to go before becoming a fixture in homes. The expense of owning a robot could be beyond the average senior’s budget. Some might be also concerned by the complexity of the new technology and the associated learning curve for seniors to feel comfortable using their new companion.

Currently, the types of robots already developed to assist in home care for seniors include:3

  1. Rehabilitation Robots- mainly used for physical rehabilitation seen in robotic prosthetics.
  2. Service Robots- developed to assist seniors with daily tasks and detect emergencies.
  3. Telepresence Robots- allow people to communicate with friends and family through telephony and teleconferencing.
  4. Companion Robots- intended to interact with people on an emotional level. These robots may be especially beneficial for people with special needs or those with dementia.

If you or someone you love is struggling to live independently at home, would you consider using a robot to assist in day-to-day activities?

If an in-home robot is not an option due to finances or other concerns, a reverse mortgage loan could help you afford in-home care or to pay for home modifications that may make living at home safer and more comfortable.
